Export Caution: Bamboo Charcoal Over 3.8×3.8cm Cross-section — Mostly Medium/Low-Temp Charcoal with Quality & Shipping Hazards
Many buyers favour large-section bamboo charcoal briquettes for perceived value. A practical trade rule: square extruded bamboo charcoal over 3.8×3.8cm cross-section is usually medium/low-temperature charcoal. It serves as a quick screening benchmark, not an absolute test standard.
High-temperature charcoal (800–1000℃) releases volatile matter thoroughly and shrinks heavily, mostly ending under 3.8×3.8cm. Medium/low-temperature charcoal (450–750℃) has incomplete carbonization and limited shrinkage, retaining larger dimensions. Custom high-temperature large-section briquettes exist but come with high cost and low availability.
Main Risks
1. Poor combustion: Lower fixed carbon and higher volatiles cause smoking, popping and flameout, triggering frequent end-customer complaints.
2. UN1361 cargo risk: Class 4.2 self-heating substance. High volatile content increases self-heating risk on sea freight. Detention and return costs are common at Saudi, EU and Japanese ports.
3. Poor batch consistency: Parameters such as ash and fixed carbon fluctuate widely.
4. False low-price advantage: Upfront savings are easily wiped out by claims, fines and abandoned cargo.
Buyer Verification Checklist
1. Pre-screen: Prioritize briquettes ≤3.8×3.8cm; flag oversized ones as high-risk.
2. Lab report check: Focus on fixed carbon, volatile matter, ash and moisture. Benchmark: ≥82% fixed carbon, volatile <12%. Medium/low-temp grade usually has volatile >15%.
3. Burn test & pilot run: Test bulk-line samples instead of lab specimens.
4. Contract lock: Specify index limits and rejection terms on PI.
Closing
3.8×3.8cm is a practical risk filter. Oversized charcoal is not automatically substandard, yet it adds testing, quality and shipping risks. For steady recurring supply, high-temperature charcoal within 3.8cm section is the safer choice.
